My Durian Reward

I promised myself that if I managed to meet my target at Seremban Half Marathom which I did last week; I'd reward myself to some durians.
 
Hubby and son eat them but not really a fan so whenever I have a hankering for durians, it's just me who'd enjoy it.
And this, even though is quite nice, is not really a substitute for durian flesh! Hahaha
So after patiently waiting for a week (I ate some at my honetown during Raya), I got my wish!
 
I'm thinking of another treat this weekend! ^^

Next Up : Ready For Pink 50

After a very satisfying and happy run at Seremban Half Marathon, now I have Pink 50 to look forward to this Saturday.
 
It's a loop format run; where the ALL female participants will need to complete a minimum of 50K in 9 hours and will be held at the rather hilly Taman Saujana Hijau in Presint 11, Putrajaya.
 
The run will also serve as my training run and to gauge whether I can complete at least 47K in less than 8 hours.
 
I need to be conservative for this, while trying to meet my target as I have King of Sungai Lembing to run in, the week after. Hohoho
 
Anyways, I hope I can do what I set out to do and enjoy myself together with all the runners, crews and supporters there although it'll be a challenge for me. Hubby works that Saturday and Son has a school activities so for once, I won't have my loyal crew with me.

Absent minded me just realised that there was an option to purchase the event tee... Which I only realised today. Dang!

I kinda like the blue one. ;-)

Seremban Half Marathon - The Third Time Around

I've never really liked Seremban Half Marathon, truthfully. I mean the route is nice and all, but there is nothing special about the race itself and I usually suffer finishing it. Yet, for the past 3 years; even with my own bad reviews, I keep coming back. Sucker! Hahaha

The route itself is undulating and can be quite a challenge. They aren't steep but you get them one after another. And the last hill at KM19 mark can really sap one's energy and suffer mentally.

Anyway, I entered this year's Seremban Half Marathon edition because I needed a 21K and I need to run it faster than my usual long run pace or my easy run pace. So I decided to rely on how I did during TM Fan Run and put a target average pace of 7:20min/km. 

But bearing in mind that I usually start slow and only pick up my pace after 3K, I only put  target pace of 8:00min/km for the first 3K.

We arrived the race venue a few minutes before 6.00am and the first order of business was search for the toilet. I needed to do both "job" before I run and went to the building next to the field to use the toilet. Apart from a nearby mosque, Muslim runners have the convenience to pray at this building too.

The Half Marathon category was flagged off at 6.30am and I met a few friends there.
Leen, Wai Ching (who managed to get 2nd placing for Men Open 10K) and Tengku Azeezoon who was pacing a friend. ^^

Flag off was at 6.31am my watch, but I only stepped on the starting timing mat at 6.33am. There seemed to be a lot more runners than previous years and there's an increase this year of Women Open 21K runners participating.

I didn't want to be too pre-occupied with looking at my Polar V800 watch and check my pace constantly so I set it to give me alert at every 3K I've done and run pretty much on perceived effort.

The first 3K felt quite easy, even with a bit of climb as we reached the KM3 mark so I was quite surprised to see that I did the first 3K in 21:14. Way faster than the 24min I had allocated for.

A runner said hi to me around KM4 as we were climbing up yet another incline. He was so nice and told me he read my blog and even welcomed me to Seremban. Awwww, thank you.

We chatted a bit about our next race - he's doing Kampar and I'll be doing Sungei Lembing. ^^

Later, another friend (the prez of a running group, no less) said hi as he passed me.

While I was slow at KM4 as we climbed a long incline, I managed to make up for lost time when we started going downhill towards KM5. Another incline at KM6-7 then it's downhill to get to the second water station located at KM8.

A friend said hi there as we stopped for a drink but I just smiled and raised my hand to acknowledge her and didn't stop to chat. Sorry! ^^! 

A cup of mineral water and a cold sponge to wipe off my sweat, and off I went again, still feeling pretty good and happy. So happy that I was singing a nasyid in my head. Not the "insaf" type but the #syukurselalu type. Hahaha

Seremban traffic sure was pretty busy today, compared to when I ran in 2013 and 2014 but have to give credit to Seremban patient drivers. Not a single honk was heard and they even made sure they drove with a gap past us. Thank you Seremban drivers for your consideration. 

The 3rd water station wasn't placed at the junction near Giant at around KM10 this year but was instead moved to KM11 near Petronas petrol station. Good choice. 

I also noticed traffic control was better this year with more volunteers and police manning junctions. Never mind there hadn't been any major incidences with traffic before this but I wish organiser would still place safety of runners as their priority. Just because no one got run over (yet) doesn't mean it'll stay that way.

KM10-14 was pretty easy with mostly flat section and I just maintained what I feel was a pace I can sustain for the next 6-10K, especially knowing there are hilly sections I need to tackle later. Two of them actually. A runner ran a bit and chatted with me at KM10 before going off as we crossed the road. It's always nice to have a bit of distraction while running and talk to people. Well, for me lah.

Another runner said hi and asked about hubby after KM12. Actually, he was the third person who asked hubby's whereabouts! Hahaha

No lah, hubby didn't run today. He and Son waited for me at the finishing line instead today.

It was at KM13 where I got to the the incline I dread and I decided to walk instead. My first walk break, for about 500m. I somehow felt relieved as I managed to walk as fast as other runners who were running beside me going uphill.

Then off I went, trying to cover the slower pace from the walk and managed to finish my 15K at 1:47 (target 1:50) so was quite happy with it. Especially since I was still feeling OK and not that tired yet. Perceived effort run seemed to be going well for me today.

But I decided to take a break at KM16 and took another walk break for a few hundred metres. Just got damn lazy and the stretch was HOT lah. Thirsty. Hihihi

A runner suddenly asked me for the time and it was 8.31am when we reached KM16.

I picked up pace afterwards and started running until I reached the KM19 mark where we had to cross a busy junction. Thankfully, I didn't have to wait to cross the road this time as there were two traffic police manning the junction.

From here, near two petrol stations, was where 21K runners converged with 10K runners. Hoards of school kids "forced" to join and complete their 10K. Hahaha

Bumped into the runner friend who had asked me about hubby earlier and said hi to him. He continued to run the last (steep) incline with another runner who had encouraged both of us while I chose to walk the incline.

A lady runner, whom I keep on either passing her or getting passed by her, patted my back to encourage me.

Knowing that I'll be able to make up for this slow time when we go downhill at the final stretch of the route, I just smiled at her and gave a thumbs up.

Sure enough, I managed to later catch up with her. We paced each other for a while before I started to push for the last few hundred metres.

As I crossed the road to get to the field to finish, I saw two friends taking photos in the middle of the closed-off road. Since I was being blocked by other runners and I want my photos taken, I weave through the crowd (instead of concentrating to finish), pose in front of them and then run towards the field. Muahaha

Hubby and Son were waiting for me at the finish line, as expected. As were a few other friends who stayed around to cheer for other runners.

And didn't feel like dying finishing it. So I was really, really happy with my run.

Leave Planning

Been really good and had not taken any annual leave of more than 2 days so far this year but I need to apply for a whole lot for Aug and September!
 

A wedding at the end of August and we'll be heading to Kuantan to attend it.

The week after, Hubby and I will be heading to Merapoh in Pahang for The Magnificent Merapoh Trail run. A 3D2N run plus camping to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Hahaha

And then, a nice week plus vacation from Malaysia day holiday to Hari Raya Haji.

Sure hope my boss won't be making too much noise when I start applying all those leave because they are almost a week apart each!

Dante Lam's To The Fore Movie Premier


I won two tickets to watch the movie premier screening of Dante Lam's upcoming cycling film, "To The Fore" on Aug 4th at GSC Pavillion courtesy of Cycling Malaysia Magazine. 

Yeay!

Though am a bit worried whether I can actually make it as the screening is at 9.00pm.

I hope I can.

If I can't, I wonder if anyone else can use the tickets instead?

Back To The Grind

So Ramadhan month is over. And now we're into the Syawal month.

May Allah accepts our fast, deeds and prayers during the Ramadhan month.

And now, back to the grind.

No more clocking in early to the office so that I can leave earlier in the evening. 

And since I talk incessantly about running, back to training!

I have been rather lazy and managed to slink away from doing my LSD for the past 3 weekends (gasp!) while being completely aware I'm just 2 months away from my big race in September and I have 3 weeks of races lined up from this weekend onwards which will essentially serve as part of training for my September race.
Seremban Half Marathon on July 26th, just because I needed to do a 21K that Sunday.
Pink 50 which is organised by Pink Runners. An all-women ultra marathon event to be held in hilly Taman Saujana Hijau, Putrajaya on Aug 1st.

I'm using this event to gauge my ability to hit a certain cut-off times of a future race I'm entering so I'll be rather conservative running in this plus there is also another race I'll be joining the week after that.
We'll be travelling to Sungai Lembing in Kuantan the week after that for King of Sungai Lembing (KOSL)! A trail race of 10K, 21K and 50K.

I actually only needed to do a 4 and half hour run on the Aug 9 weekend but I figured, we're already travelling to Sungai Lembing so I might as well just do 50K. Hahaha

I'll try my best to finish within the 9-hours cut-off time. Admittedly, KOSL will just be a fun race for me. It will not be an easy race but I plan to have fun!

After those three weeks of races, I'll just do my runs at home until the first week of September.
Then, hubby and I will be heading to Merapoh, Pahang for another trail run, The Magnificent Merapoh Trail (TMMT). But this time, we choose to do 30K instead of 60K.

TMMT will be a memorable run for us as it falls on our 16th wedding anniversary. ^^

Now, I need to buck up and be more serious with training and no more slacking off!

Aidil Fitri 1436H

Aidil Fitri (Eid ul Fitri) marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting. Eid is an Arabic word meaning festivity, while Fitr means to break the fast.

And for us Malaysians, Hari Raya Aidil Fitri means Day of Celebration to mark the end of fasting.

For me, it's a time for joyous celebration and an excuse to look forward to see family and friends whom might be hard for us to meet at other times.
My family sans one sibling.

I know I have been terrible at getting back or meet-up with my own family members so at least we have the Raya. ^^!
This year, we also need to made a special stop here too.

When Runners Unite. SCKLM Back To Its Original Date

Well, let's hope it stays that way.

Here's YB Khairy Jamaluddin FB status about Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2015 date which made the whole running community, not only in Malaysia but overseas too; united against such interference in their beloved sport.
Statement on the Standard Chartered KL Marathon.
I’ve read all your tweets, Facebook messages and emails regarding the date change of the Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2015. There are a few things I want to clear up.
The National Sports Day isn’t about achieving KPIs or hijacking events. There are noble intentions in what we were trying to do. We were trying to get as many Malaysians from different ethnicities, religions, age, location and walks of life out there as one to do as many sporting activities as possible on one day.
The power of sports to unite people can not be underestimated. When you’re running, cycling, lifting weights or playing football, they person next to you isn’t defined by what they look like, but rather what they’re able to achieve. Not in relation to you, but in relation to themselves. Sports has that power to show you what your limits are and then pushes you to exceed them.
Ten months ago, my ministry launched the Fit Malaysia initiative with this in mind. In that short time, we’ve seen great success in bringing people together. We’ve had tens of thousands of people who might ordinarily not exercise come out to join us in our fitness activities. We’ve had people who might ordinarily not mix around outside their ethnic boundaries come together as one. Everyone who’ve been at the events have been Malaysians.
The National Sports Day is the culmination of the Fit Malaysia movement -- one day in a year where everyone gets off the couch, comes out, and does something, not for fitness or sports, but for themselves. To join organised runs like the Standard Chartered KL Marathon or the Spartan Race, dance at the Score FitMob, play football or badminton, or just get out there to your local neighbourhood park with your loved ones and do something.
The National Sports Day is not a political event with a political agenda, like how Teachers Day or Cancer Awareness Month are not. It was to be our step towards becoming a sporting nation and to make sports and fitness part of a Malaysian culture, identity and lifestyle. We are a sports-loving nation but we are nowhere near being a sporting nation.
That was the idea behind changing the date of the Standard Chartered KL Marathon. It was a joint decision between the ministry, Standard Chartered, Dirigo Events and DBKL, and for that I thank them for their commitment and support to this national agenda. Not only them, but all the other organisers and partners who’ve pledged to pull their weight to come together on that one day.
It was not to “hijack” their event to artificially boost participation for the inaugural National Sports Day or to achieve my KPI. We were looking for several iconic events all around Malaysia and we realised that there is a hunger for running events, evident from the spots that have been quickly sold out in these events.
I have personally been reading a lot of your comments about the marathon and have held many discussions with the organisers and other stakeholders. We have jointly come to the conclusion that the Standard Chartered KL Marathon will be reverted back to October 4, considering the many issues that have been raised.
On behalf of the ministry, Standard Chartered, Dirigo and DBKL, I apologise for the inconvenience caused by the earlier change in date and I hope that you all will still come forward to support the National Sports Day.

Malaysian runners of all creed and background rallied together against this blatant hijacking from KBS and made ourselves heard.

It may seem trivial to non-runners, but this is a big deal to us. And actually, it is a big deal to see such vocal unity in the midst of so many negative news lately.

BRAVO US!

When Politics Enter Sports - Change of Date For Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2015

 
I'm highly disappointed with this.

It's one thing to postpone a race date to haze (as per in 2013) or election (BIM 2012), natural disaster (Mount Kinabalu Climbathon 2015) or national security or other more valid reasons for an INTERNATIONAL event but to move Standard Chartered KL Marathon date from Oct 4th to Oct 10th is just an irresponsible move from Ministry of Youth and Sports with nary a care of the costs involved by overseas and outstation participants who had registered for the event.

The impact will not only be towards the 35K runners who registered but also their family members, their work (those who might need to change their work schedule since the run is now on a Saturday) and also traffic in KL on a working Saturday.

Unless of course, we suddenly get Oct 10th declared as a National Holiday.

Plus, Standard Chartered KL Marathon is not a government organised event but it has to conform to whims of others who wants to see grandeur on the so-called National Sports Day.

Sad day indeed.

Huh.

The song also reminded us that we may have been influenced to follow others to be accepted and lose our own identity until we finally realise our own self-worth.

Ultra Running 101 Clinic

An ultra marathon running clinic which was an initiative by the organisers of Putrajaya 100, Penang 100 and Route 68 Challenge was held on Saturday, July 4th 2015 at Taman Seri Empangan in Putrajaya.

It was held on Saturday night, after Terawih prayers so the clinic started at 10.00pm.

Various topics such as history of ultra marathons, preparation for a race, training tips, race strategy, nutrition and hydration during the race and importance of race gears was covered during the clinic and then participants get to do a short (ehem) 10K run, led by Santai Runners.

The clinic also enables those new to the ultra running scene to get to know familiar faces in the Malaysia ultra running; be it runners, race directors or volunteers. There were a few that I noticed who have absolutely no idea who the people that came as speakers were!

It was also a chance for us to meet our friends and have an excuse to makan! Because a number of generous people brought a whole lot of food to the clinic too. Thank you!

There were four speakers at the clinic and they talked about a different topic each.
First speaker, Jeff Ooi talking about Ultra marathons, the history and what ultra marathons is all about.
Second speaker, Jason Tan talking about mandatory gears in ultra marathons and training and racing tips. 
Third speaker, Arman Arshad elaborating more about the history of ultra marathons, dos and don'ts and other requirements for ultra marathons.
Fourth speaker, ET Tey talking about runners' etiquette and responsibility & safety.

It was a good first clinic especially to those who are aiming to do their first ultra marathons, to learn more on what it means to run in one and what is required.

However, I do wish some of the participants respect the speakers and refrained from talking amongst each other loudly at the back and making it hard for those who wanted to listen to the speakers hear anything.

Basic etiquette is always important. Running or respecting others.

I hope there will be more clinics held in the future and maybe with a longer run (but I'll be looking for a slower group to run with. Hohoho).
And we even celebrated a fellow runner's birthday too, who happened to celebrate her birthday on the 4th of July. ^^

One Long Run A Month

This post is about celebrating our effort (hubby and mine) in trying to achieve one long run (50K and above) a month. Gotta celebrate and be proud of ourselves lah... If we are not proud of us, who else will? Right? Hihihi
 
We don't aim to finish fast. We just aim to go a bit far. Just to test ourselves.
 
So here's to that awesome long runs done so far and am sure looking forward to more in future. :-)
 
JANUARY
We did a 10-hours session, just the two of us on the second week of January, covering part of the Putrajaya 100 route. Didn't know the actual distance as I didn't wear my watch (because it died on me already) and Hubby's endomondo stopped reading after we reached 21K and we only realised it after we reached Taman Rimba Alam. Huhuhu. Anyways...
Watergate 16-hours. January 1- 11th, 2015.
He did 60K.
She did 80K.

FEBRUARY
I was invited to join the Patriot 200 which was under the Saltfish Series, 200K within 48 hours that was held from February 13 - 15th, 2015.
 
While we didn't officially join as we had other commitments on Saturday, we attempted the same route as the other participants on Friday night and on Sunday and the organiser was generous enough to share their rations with us.

We managed to do a 40K on Friday night, then 21K on Saturday night and finished off with another 20K on Sunday. A mere 80K done during that weekend in total but we were happy with what we did.
 
MARCH
I did Gunung Nuang Ultra on March 1st, 2015. A solo run this time while hubby waited and supported me at the event.
 
I was very conservative and pretty much just walked the whole 50K and of course, being a slow poke, it took me 12 hours to complete my 50K minimum. Hahaha
 
A good run(walk) nevertheless and while there were hard moments, I enjoyed this a lot. :-)
 
APRIL
 
We DNS an event due to an unforeseen circumstances in the early month of April and we just decided to do our own session for April and chose the long Labour Day/Wesak weekend for it.
A 50K couple run along Putrajaya, covering the Core Island, Pullman, Presint 16 and 17. We started on Friday, April 30th at 10.30pm and finished the next day at 10.00am.
 
No medal. No glory. Complete satisfaction.
 
MAY
A week plus after of Labour Day session; on May 10th, we joined the Route 68 Challenge, and we did 50K together, Hubby and I.
 
JUNE 
June was an anticipated month for me. I joined Back 2 Endurance in June. Hubby decided to support and crew for me for this one instead.
 
With his assistance, I managed to get 71.3K that day on June 14th, 2015. ^^

A few shorter distance runs and races and this, I think we did pretty good for our first half of the year. The most important thing is we both enjoyed the time spent together.
 
Looking forward to the 2nd half of 2015!

15 Days Into Ramadhan

I'm not going to talk about fasting or any ibadah I do during the fasting month. I've already blogged about fasting and the challenges one may face during this Holy month in previous years and I don't think I want to repeat myself.
 
Truly, for many of us; apart from not eating during the day, the fact that I get to go off from work an hour earlier (and clock in to work an hour earlier too), have busier nights due to terawih prayers or baking raya cookies or whatever, life remains pretty much the same. Right?
 
And it's the same with training. With Standard Chartered KL Marathon and Putrajaya Night Marathon looming in a few months time, many do need to continue with their training.
 
I train. I still run. Most times before buka puasa (iftar) and during weekends, in the wee hour of the morning before sahur. Adjustment.
 
There is no big deal about training in this fasting month, actually. Adjust accordingly. That's all.
 
Granted, my training runs so far isn't all that great but better than nothing, right? For now, I'm trying to be consistent and not be too lazy. Hur hur
 
I took it easy on the first week of puasa as I just completed Back 2 Endurance run the Sunday before.

The Saturday run was done around the core island of Putrajaya before buka puasa and then my family & I buka puasa, picnic style. I blogged about it, remember? :)

Just really short runs during the weekdays last week but I managed to slot in a tempo run on Saturday morning and then do a 21K later at night with a couple of walk training up the hill of my housing area during the day. ^^

I am doing better (I think) this week but now I have a headache on how I'm putting in my 29K long run. The options now is:
1. Start at 1am, finish before sahur on Saturday hoping that I won't get too stuffed to run as I'll be heading for a buka puasa at Cititel Hotel on Friday. Hahaha
2. Splitting the runs into two sessions - morning and night. We'll be heading for an Ultra training clinic on Saturday night and probably I can do a 15K at the most after the clinic.
 
We see how lah. Splitting the runs is not desirable but at least I'll be putting some mileage, and doing it that way can simulate running with tired legs. I will have two running sessions in my training soon so maybe I'll do it if I can't do that long run of mine on Saturday morning.
