Twenty First Day of Ramadan. The Last Ten Nights

O Allah, on this day, show me the way to win Your pleasure, do not let Shaytan have a means over me, make Paradise an abode and a resting place for me, O the One who fulfills the requests of the needy.

It's the last 10 nights and days of Ramadan; the days are even more blessed than the rest of Ramadan. Among these nights is Laylat al-Qadr or what we know as Lailatul Qadar (the Night of Power) – a night more blessed than a thousand months.

The last ten nights of Ramadan are very special. The first of these nights occurs on the eve of the 21st day of Ramadan. In other words, it is the night that commences after the completion of the 20th day of fasting.

Sometimes there are only nine nights, whenever the month of Ramadan lasts for only 29 days. Nevertheless, they are still traditionally referred to as "the last ten nights".

I made it up to 19 days of continuous updates in this post this Ramadan month. I decided to take a break on the twentieth day. Just to be restraint a bit and not bog you readers with my daily nonsense. It's a relief, right? ^^

I'm back! Maybe I'll restrain myself again tomorrow? heh heh

Raimie has been a rather helpful boy in the kitchen this fasting month. Well, mostly when Mommy is cooking. Daddy doesn't really want him to help out (or rather disturb). But usually, Raimie is also the one helping setting the table.
 Oh yeah. School will be off next week for two weeks. Rejoice!

Eighteenth Day of Ramadan. It's Autumn?

Where's the memo on the season change? I must've missed it because I thought it should be still summer now?

Anyhoo, we made a last minute decision on Thursday to have our iftar there. Had wanted to treat Raimie to a McD meal but at the last minute, Zaini and I both realised that we have about RM13.00 combined in our wallets! hur hur

What to do when cash in hand is not enough? Splurge by eating at a place that accept credit card. *weird logic* Hahaha

Anyhoo... we ended up eating these
Well, Mommy had this. Daddy had it without the salmon sashimi. Nice, I guess but I still prefer Miyagi. I guess in keeping with the autumn menu, the yakiniku is cooked with plenty of mushrooms. I love mushrooms, but in this dish, the mushrooms kinda drown the beef taste.
Son had this. Chicken katsu curry. Not too sweet. He managed to wallop everything on the place plus
Mommy's salmon too!

Service was good and attentive here so no complaints. I got 10% off by using Amex card. So no complaints there either.

Son was so happy eating the curry rice, he asked for one again on Friday.

I'll cook one at home today. Nothing from scratch though.
I'm just using ready-made sauce mix. Then, throw in veges in the curry mix. Gonna serve it with chicken katsu. Son insisted on that!

Sunday will be another curry day. Fish head curry. Mommy is cooking curry two days in a row!

Seventeenth Day of Ramadan. Of Clashing Events And Priorities

This is the year of road races postponement and clashing events. EPIC!

The month of September will be a havoc month for runners. My birthday month. ^^

There's River Jungle Marathon on Sep 1st for me. It's supposed to be my third full marathon after Malaysia Women Marathon and Borneo International Marathon (BIM) but BIM got postponed to August due to the General Election.

I'm hoping to join Pacesetter's Back to Basics 30K run on Sep 8th, which made my decision not registering for the popular Men's Health & Shape Night Run on Sep 7th a good call.

Sep 15th will be crazy! Remember my post about Live Great Run appreciation dinner? I got free VIP registration to join the run. I had also registered for CICM Responsible Care run, a 21K run in Putrajaya. Then, the McD Olympic Day Run which was supposed to be held on June 23rd was postponed due to haze had now been confirmed to be held on the same day as the other two races on Sep 15th.
Just imagine, I registered for 3 races that are now going to be held on the same day!

I'd love to do the 21K run as that's my favourite distance but Raimie had been looking forward to run the McD Run so I'll forgo the other races and run with my family that day. I can always run half marathons any other week but it is not often I run with the family. There is more to running than getting a finisher t-shirt, you know. Heh.

Then, on Sep 29th Standard Chartered KL Marathon will be back! New date after being postponed from June 30th due to... you guessed it. HAZE! A 21K for Mommy and a 2.5K Kids' Dash for Son.

For those who will run every week in September - from short distances, to half-marathons, to full marathons to Ultra races; ALL THE BEST. Stay injury free!

Fifteenth Day of Ramadan. Of Awesome People In My Life

O Allah, on this day, do not condemn me for slips, make me decrease mistakes and errors, do not make me a target for afflictions and troubles, by Your honor, O the honor of the Muslims.

For those who are fasting for the first time - hang in there! You are doing it marvelously! ^^ 

My son has so far no problem fasting. Good job, Son!

Anyway, talking about Son;
I guess he was a bit bored yesterday and he offered to look and pull out my *uban* white hair.

I asked him "I have white hair???" #denialmode
"Yes, you have. You have it under all those black ones" he answered 
and he proceeded to pull out a dozen white hairs.
Wuuuwuuuwuuu 
Nothing made me feel old like having lots and lots of white hair.

Thirteenth Day of Ramadan. The Night Is Alive


O Allah, on this day, purify me from uncleanliness and dirt, make me patient over events that are decreed, grant me the ability to be pious, and keep company with the good, by Your help, O the beloved of the destitute.
Come to Putrajaya this Ramadan month and there's a Ramadan Festival along Qiblat walk, heading to Masjid Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin (Masjid Besi) apart from the Ramadan Bazaar.

Twelfth Day of Ramadan : A Change of Pace

So it's the fasting month.

So some of us still need to train as there are races, marathons and ultra marathons waiting for us come August, September and till the end of year.

Life doesn't stop during Ramadan.

It goes on, with a little bit of adjusting.

No morning runs, we made do with night runs. Late night runs in Putrajaya with a couple of running groups, after the Terawih prayers.

Happy to say, Putrajaya is alive with people enjoying healthy activities. ^^

Tenth Day of Ramadan : Out of My Comfort Zone

It was Tuesday. The car was still in the workshop. A few colleagues and friends offered me a ride to office. I declined.
I walked from my house to the KTM station and took komuter train to office instead. Yeah, there are buses that ply the route to the KTM station but oh what's wrong with a little bit of walking?

Zaini walked with me, of course.

Anyway, the 30 minutes walk was nothing to sweat of, but I decided to sulk and pout at Zaini. Just because. HAHAHA

Poor guy. Not his fault the car got into an accident and the workshop took longer than promised to get the car ready.

Anyway, he just ignored my sulking and behaved normally because he knows I'll cool down soon. I hate that guy somethimes. But I lurrvvve him too. *dush*

Talking about comfort zone... With reports of robberies, mugging, snatch thefts, kidnapping...
If we are all so alarmed at our safety, why do most of us stayed glued to our gadget screen whenever we have the chance. Walking, crossing the road, driving?

Stop looking at the blasted screen and be aware of your surrounding instead!

Ninth Day of Ramadan : What's For Iftar?

Or for break fast? Buka puasa?

My family doesn't go overboard. We just eat like we always do for dinner. Simple.

We enjoyed a Malay fare, Nasi Kerabu a couple of times; bought from a makcik who lives 4 floors below my FIL. She sells Nasi Kerabu and Nasi Dagang at her stall during Ramadan. 

We are not really fans of trying everything and anything at the Pasar Ramadan anyway.

Something like this. Simple home cooked meals. One glance and I can't help think - carbo loading for race ke apa nih? Hahaha

Last night we had this. Love the RM9.90 Subway Ramadan month promo! I always do! ;-)
But maybe someday, I'll cook something nice... 

I was drooling over Millie's pucuk paku masak tempoyak the other day. ;)

Anyway, just because we fast the whole day doesn't mean we need to fill up our dining table with food that may just go to waste after that!

Eighth Day of Ramadan : Training

My first week of Ramadan running mileage.

Lower than what I should be doing but still OK. I skipped Sunday run because I wasn't feeling too good. Didn't run on the first two days of fasting too because of some matters that kinda prevented me from doing it.

Hope I can do more this week and the weeks after this, during Ramadan month.

And I take whatever mileage I can get. Junk or not junk. Running or walking. Like this :
Walking from LRT station to car workshop instead of taking a bus or a cab and deal with traffic jam.
Or taking the KTM and walking to the station instead of taking a bus there.

My, my.

A short running post from me?

Sixth Day of Ramadan. Counting My Blessings

With food. Kinda.

A few get together with running friends, colleagues and of course enjoying meals together with my lovely family. Food brings people together. ^^

Had a small Krazirunners gathering some time back, a week before Hat Yai Marathon which one of the ladies participated. Congrats Nannoor on her second full marathon there!

I had not planned to stay long for dinner but the dinner party was great and we actually stayed on chatting till it's almost closing time! Great company. A pleasant surprise too, that Rashid was there having dinner  with his friends.
A department head is leaving the company soon and had arranged for a party to inform her staff about it. I was invited to join her and her staff for the lunch. I am touched that they included me.  All the best to you!
 
My own department lunch and I shared two dishes with a colleague. We always do that whenever we eat out. Actually, usually it's the three of us but one was away for training.
A once-a-week treat with the family. Somethis this brand of ice cream. Sometimes, we get our treat eating RM1 ice cream bought from 7-11. Sometimes
from the ice cream vendor. All are nice especially as I can share them together with the people I care.
A simple meal is still a nice meal with family and friends.

Fifth Day of Ramadan. Decisions and Imposition

Registration for Putrajaya Night Marathon  is open. For a few days already.

I have yet registered for it.

Zaini and I ran the half marathon in Putajaya Night Marathon last year. I ran my first Putrajaya Night Run in 2011, doing a 10K. This year, I am still undecided which category to register for. A natural progression would be a full marathon?

The thing is, this year the Putrajaya Night Marathon will be held on the night of Oct 19th. On the morning on Oct 20th, Adidas King of the Road will be held. I would love to run both.
Adidas King of the Road is special, because when else does one get to run on a road that is totally closed for traffic during a race? I can even monkey around, lie on the road and stuff.

Some of us are actually seriously thinking about doing both. Like, really. Doing a back-to-back events.

I think it will be a unique experience.

But then, to do both will be subjecting one or two family members to tag along and wait for me for hours. Like someone *ehem* mentioned to me more than once; it's one thing for me to subject myself to this kind of suffering but to somehow involve unwilling victims family members to experience it with me would be another.

So now, the question still remains. What do I sign up for? Decisions, decisions.

I've gotten more and more comments from strangers/runners over at FB about my two boys who had patitently waited for me. It's kinda hard to miss them because they usually would station themselves midpoint of any races, take photos till I arrived then rushed back to the finish line and waited for me. For people to notice them is great. Yes, they are my marvelously patient supporters and I am a very lucky gal to have them.

That's why I try not to abuse the support they give me. (Like making them sleep for a mere 3-4 hours while I run two races, maybe?) Hmm...

Fourth Day of Ramadan. A Passing Thought

It’s the wee hours in the morning.

I’ve just finished my run. I needed to do a 26K run this week as River Jungle Marathon is a mere 7 weeks away but I’ll take whatever mileage I can do and hope to “pay-it-back” next week with the running group in Putrajaya.

I chose to do my long run in the weekend very early (or rather late at night), so that I finish in time for sahur. I plan to just hibernate at least half a day after this. HAHAHA

Raimie has no issues with fasting. He’s been observing this every Ramadan since he was 6. Of course, when he first fasted; we allow him to break fast at noon or whenever he felt he couldn’t continue anymore. It was never a big issue to get him to fast anyway.

When he first started, we promised him a certain amount of “duit raya” for each day he managed to fast. Turned out, he never bothered to claim the “duit raya” after that so now, just to indulge him a little bit for being such a good boy; he gets to choose whatever he wants to eat for sahur and iftar. He asked for a Nasi Kerabu and we had it last night. No more, no less.

I am blessed to have such easy-going kid. ^^

In this Holy month of Ramadan, it is good for us to look at our lives and count our blessings, however small they may be.

Also, to think about others who are in situations that are far worse than us. While we are in a relatively safe country, there are others experiencing famine, war and displacement.

Another reminder to self:
After realising how fortunate we are, we must strive forward and use our good fortune to be a better person, lead a better life and help others too.

Third Day of Ramadan - The Real Meaning of Puasa

A reminder to all of us who are observing the fasting month and those who doesn't, something for me to share with you. ^^

Weekends is almost here.

I'm planning to either do a longish run tonight or really early tomorrow morning. Can't go to Putrajaya, what with the car being "sick" so I'll just settle with running in loops for 2-3 hours around my carpark. No use whining. Just do! ^^

Second Day of Ramadan - Trials And Rising Above Challenges

First day of fasting came and went. We survived it without any hassle. Life does go as usual, albeit a wee bit differently.

Waking up at 5.00am to cook pre-dawn meal for instance. Zaini was marvelous and actually cooked our first sahur of Ramadan. Raimie wanted to eat fried rice and that was what he got. Brown rice fried rice. Chewy. ;)

Massive traffic jam experienced on Wednesday. Yeah, yeah... blame it all on us rushing back after work to break fast at home.

The boys got a bit of shock earlier.
This red car banged into Zaini's car somewhere along Jalan Bangsar. The lady was pretty much shaken. Raimie too. Poor boy. Good thing no one was hurt.

The car will be in a workshop this weekend "recuperating".

That's one small trial for us during this holy month.

With trials, one should rise above the occasion, tackling any challenges headlong and come out stronger.

Never Again!

That's what I told Zaini after I finished my Seremban Half Marathon. No, not never again running a half marathon or running but I told him I won't ever ask him to drive me over to Seremban to run in this race again.

There were a small number of female half-marathon runners at this event, but every time I saw one of them before the start, I went OMG! OMG!
1. The runners were all fast and seasoned runners
2. This race only gives out limited amount of medals.
OMG! OMG! Omaigad!!!
But I have to give credit where credit goes.

Pros :
  • Punctual start. A member of Negri Sembilan royalty flagged us off and yet, he was there before 6.30am! Respect. Other members of VVIPs in Malaysia should take heed of YAM Tunku Dato' Seri Utama Naquiyuddin ibni Almarhum Tuanku Ja'afar example and follow suit on time management.
  • Ample water stations, stationed at every 4km and also cold sponges too. If I'm not mistaken, there were three sponge stations. Gatorade was served!
  • Cheerful student volunteers manning the water stations, ever ready to pass us cups of drinks.
  • Sprays were also available at most water stations and at the finish too.
  • Plenty of officials taking down runners numbers along the route. (Is it a pro? eheh heh)
  • Very patient Seremban drivers. Yes, some of them whizzed past us but none honked at us. And at junctions, most actually slowed down and gave way.
  • Nice route despite me getting conned thinking it is generally a flat route. Hahaha
Cons :
  • Except at certain junctions, no road marshalling. We ran at our own risk, making sure we kept to the left to avoid getting run over by cars. By the way, NTV7 Feel Good Run wasn't such a feel good run today as 3 female runners were ran over by an unknown car. o.O
  • Some of the traffic police were more keen about letting cars move on, than they were at making sure runners cross the road safely. I had to wait for a freaking 2 MINUTES(!) at a junction while the cops ignored me and other runners there and kept on letting cars pass. I finally had enough and ran away from the junction to a stretch that I can safely cross the road without the cops' assistance. No, I don't appreciate the unwanted "rest" that I got courtesy of the cops.
  • Merged with the school kids doing the 10K at the last 2K and boy... imagine sharing a one lane road with cars and motorbikes (and lorries) AND a gaggle of school kids who were having fun doing their Sunday walk, completely oblivious to road safety or road etiquette, let alone about runners' etiquette.
  • Nobody bothered about me at the finish line. I wasn't even sure where to head to or what to do after crossing the finish line timing mat. The Women's finish area had a white banner thingy obstructing the way so I hesitated there. While standing to find another way to pass through, a female volunteer finally noticed me and passed me my cert, medal and a lucky draw coupon.
  • There were plenty of vendors selling ice cream and whatnot. But the Milo vans were packed with kids and I think that was the only refreshment booth at the field, apart from another one serving... diluted grape flavoured drink(?)
  • No snack packs. We were given a lucky draw coupon instead and I got a snack pack. Oooooo bestnyer! 
When the half-marathoners were flagged off, the road we ran was filled with kids walking hand-in-hand happily oblivious that half-marathon runners were barelling through. I tapped a few on the shoulders and told them to move to the side. At that time, I wasn't annoyed at them (yet) but was worried that someone might run into them and both (walkers and runners) could get hurt.

The first km was a mess for me. My running skirt/tight kept on slipping down and I had to keep pulling them up. To make matter worse, I was wearing a rather short 2012 Penang Bridge Marathon vest. *slap forehead* Buat malu saja. Uhukhuk

Approaching an incline at around KM4, I met a lady runner (and marathoner). Girls being girls. We were like "hey! I have that same skirt" and "Yeah, bought it at MWM expo" that sort of talk. LOL 
My lovely boys waited for me at KM11. Zaini took shots of other runners (and me, of course!). Raimie ran with me for a few metres to give encouragement to me. Love them to bits, I do. ^^

I really had a beef with some of the kids at the final 2km. I was already in a foul mood for taking a forced 2minute rest at the junction because I could not cross the road, courtesy of the "helpful" traffic people who just ignored me and a couple of other runners. I don't mind waiting to cross safely, BUT for 2MINUTES????? Standing under the sun for 2minutes when you already ran 19KM and all you want to do is to finish and rest????

It was here, at KM19 that half-marathon runners merged with 10K runners. School kids up ahead!

Just as I was running up an incline after the junction, in front of a Petronas station, two boys saw fit to run side by side me. They were talking in Tamil but the gist was, they were making fun of this auntie and wanted to outrun me. You want to show you run fast, go ahead la boys. But you DO. NOT. HAVE. TO. KEEP. BUMPING. INTO. ME and obstruct my way. By the way, I totally smoked them after 100m. *smirk*

Then, at the final 1.5km, it was almost impossible to run. I tried. When it was a downhill stretch. But again, some kids seems to take offence (or maybe got excited) and decided to sprint ahead of me each time I passed them. Again, you want to outrun me, by all means go ahead. BUT. PLEASE. DO. NOT. SPRINT. AND. STOP. RIGHT. IN FRONT. OF. SOMEONE who is also running. It's dangerous. Both of us could get hurt.

The one lane road going down was packed with school kids and they were completely disregarding their safety and was hogging up the lane. It would be OK if the road was closed off to traffic but it wasn't.

I really marvel at Seremban drivers' patience because despite these morons causing them a traffic jam, no honking were heard. AT ALL.

As I was running towards Parkson, I felt a bit confused. Tired is one thing. Seeing the front of Parkson completely filled with people and nobody showing the way to the finish line is another. Runners blocking the road right before the entrance to MPS field was another matter. I shouldn't be the one to say "excuse me, I need to pass" when all I want to do was finish, right? 

Oh yeah, before I forgot. Kids... If you start your 10K "walk" even before the half-marathoners were flagged off, don't you think that you're cheating? I noticed a group of them when I was running the first 3K. Zaini noticed a number of them too, all wearing the K and L bibs. Bravo kids!

Some of you may say that this is a small thing. BUT you start doing something bad small first before moving on to do bigger wrongs.
Can you see the massive crowd at the tent area and also the long queue in the forefront? Those were part of the 10K crowd.

This is the only photo I took with other runners there. I was feeling so tired and grumpy... I didn't want to linger any longer. Congrats Edan on your win!
Thought wanna eat breakfast at A&W but sooooooo many people!
So we ended up having a Subway breakfast. Well, the boys did. I can't seem to eat (was feeling vomitty) so I only had a cup of coffee.
My certificate of completion, a Royal Selangor made medal and my lucky draw goodies. They don't give out mineral water to finishers but instead I had to redeem my lucky draw coupon to get this. Haish.
